The South Beloit Firefighters Association is ready to butter up some corn on the cob for hungry residents and raise some money for the fire department while they’re at it.
The annual South Beloit Corn Boil is set for Aug. 22 at South Beloit City Park.
South Beloit Firefighter Matt Lee said many new features will be added to the fundraiser this year, like a flea market and a car show. A fireworks display is scheduled at dusk.
“We’ll have a bounce house for kids and a mechanical bull,” Lee said. “There will be bands playing and a co-ed volleyball tournament.”
Attendees can expect to see three to four food vendors supplying food options. And of course there will be plenty of corn to munch on.
Kids also can participate in a Junior Firefighters Challenge at the event. Music will be provided by bands such as Over The Limit, Shifty Shafer, South Bound, Red Ball Jet, Amperage and Soul 2 Soul.
“We usually get a few hundred people at the Corn Boil,” Lee said. “This year we’re trying to make it bigger.”
Firefighter (soon to be Lieutenant) Andrew Kitson said the South Beloit Fire Department is in the process of building a new training facility behind the fire station on Gardner Street. Money made from the Corn Boil will directly benefit the effort.
