ELECTED OFFICIALS
Tom Fitzgerald
Mayor
Mayor Thomas Fitzgerald's journey in public service began in 2015 when he was first elected to the South Beloit City Council following years in the Council Chamber as an active listener and involved resident. His dedication and deep rooted love for South Beloit quickly became evident, leading to his role as Mayor pro tem halfway through his second term. In 2023 he was elected Mayor, a position he continues to hold with pride and proven commitment.
Before his elected terms, Mayor Fitzgerald was instrumental in transforming the property between Charles Street and Dickop Street, now known as Nature at the Confluence, in a part time capacity hired by Mayor Michael Duffy.
Mayor Fitzgerald is a proud 1968 graduate of South Beloit High School. He and his wife of 55 years, Wendy, raised two sons, Scott and Jimmy. Scott and Jimmy have achieved great success in their careers but nothing compares to the love and enjoyment the four grandchildren provide the family. Mayor Fitzgerald retired in 2009 after a remarkable 40-year career with the CP Railroad.
Throughout his tenure, Mayor Fitzgerald has witnessed significant changes in the City. From struggling to balance the budget to achieving financial stability and making major capital investments each year, he has seen many trials, tribulations and successes. Despite challenges such as volatile government, funding issues, and unfunded mandates, Mayor Fitzgerald remains focused on the future. Mayor Fitzgerald takes pride in South Beloit’s financial stability, the strong foundation laid by the City Council, tireless efforts by staff, and the continuous progress being made to the City's infrastructure and equipment. His story is a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and a deep love for one’s community.
